Sustainability FMB Award

Sustainability Award of the Year for the South West 2023

This exceptional five-bedroom property in Cheltenham was built to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint using the latest renewable technologies whilst still maintaining a modern, luxury appeal.

The commitment to sustainability is clear throughout in the implementation of A-rated appliances including air-source heat pumps, heat recovery systems, solar panels, water-restriction devices and upgraded cavity wall insulation.

A beautiful aesthetic has also been achieved thanks to the Ashlar stone facade and coping stone set over four storeys, with an oak and glass staircase and stairwell designed to usher in natural light, giving the property a unique and elegant look.

Our client was thrilled with the result, stating ‘The technological components are complemented by a remarkably high-quality finish and exceptional attention to detail all around the building… Priory Villa is a fine contribution to Cheltenham’s building legacy and an equally fine reflection of the highest standards of sustainable construction delivered by Thorn Homes’.

FMB Tradesperson of the year South West winner

Rod Macauley

Tradesperson of the Year Award

We are proud to announce our very own Rod Macauley won Tradesperson of the Year, for the South West, at the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) 2021 Awards.

Rod joined Thorn Homes more than 12 years ago, bringing a wealth of valuable experience and knowledge to our growing construction company. The company decided to nominate Rod, due to the positive feedback constantly received by our customers.

The FMB Awards celebrate the high-quality craftsmanship, exceptional customer service and building excellence delivered by the Master Builders all over the UK. The winners in various categories, across the regions were announced at a virtual ceremony (because of the pandemic) in May and all the winners will now go on to compete in the National Master Builder Awards in September.

Small and medium-sized construction companies make a significant contribution to the UK construction industry and these awards help to recognise them.

Winner of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) Small Renovation Projects

Thorn Homes were chosen by the South West regional judges as the winner of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) ‘Extensions and renovations under £100,000′ prize in the South West 2012. This category is the most relevant to all homeowners, as we all spend up to this amount on our properties, in our lifetime. For more information about the awards please visit the FMB’s website.

Master Builders Nominations must come from satisfied clients and builders are judged on their building technical ability together with their customer service.

As a FMB regional winner Thorn Homes was then considered by a national panel of judges. The FMB national winners of the 11th Master Builder of the Year Awards was announced by architect and TV presenter George Clarke.

Mr Trevor Thorn, owner and director of Thorn Homes said “I am very proud of the building achievements of our team and this builds on the success of our award in 2010 when we were the South West runners up.”

The Award winning project

The project comprised of two story and single story extensions with a basement games room below. Thorn Homes carried out full landscaping of the rear garden formed over multiple levels. Even creating a bmx track for the clients’ children using the materials that were excavated to form the basement.

Thorn Homes worked closely with the client to meet their needs and requirements. The basement was a difficult task carried out through winter months, with limited access and space but as always, we rose to the building challenge. The client was so pleased with the outcome and so nominated Thorn Homes in the Federation of Master Builders Awards which we won first prize.

Mr & Mrs Dr Laker are still enjoying their build and remain to be one of our references.
